Gals of Grace - April 2012

A Spring...in Your Step

"He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?" (Romans 8:1-32).

Ah.. the sounds and the smells of spring and the changes it brings. I enjoy spring projects... cleaning the windows, planting flowers and vegetable gardens, setting out the patio furniture, etc. Sometimes it seems a long time in coming as we endure the March snow and the April rain showers and days when the winds continue to blow. But we set our trust in the Lord that the winter will pass and spring will soon be here?

"Let us press on to know the LORD; his going out is sure as the dawn; he will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth." Hos. 6:3

Then spring finally arrives and God's beautiful earth brings new refreshing changes. Spring flowers bloom, trees bud and sprout and again through God's provision we see the brown earth change to lush green grass, trees fill with buds and leaves. God is faithful in providing vegetation by the growth we see in our plants and trees and all that He has created. He generously provides for us in our physical needs.

But it doesn't stop there...God's has a bigger, broader plan in mind as he provides for our spiritual needs.. "For God so loved the Word that He gave His only son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life" John 3:16. God provided the way for all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth of Christ. Jesus Christ has provided the only way for sinful man to be reconciled to his Creator God.

"By sending his own Son, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit." Romans 8:4

As we see the transformation of spring..may our hearts and lives be renewed and strengthened by the Love of Christ. May Christ's love flood our hearts so we can grow and blossom into the people God has called us to be. May our lives be filled with the freshness of the spirit of God so others can see the joy we have as children of God.

Renew your relationship with Christ today and walk with a spring in your step as you become the person God has called you to be.

Lord Jesus, you are my living Savior, the one I love, the one I trust, and the one I worship, for who you are and all you have done for me. I praise you, LORD God, Creator God and Almighty King!

Hymn for the Month

Showers of Blessings

By: James McGranahan

There shall be showers of blessings
This is the promise of love;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
Sent from the Savior above.

Showers of blessing,
Showers of blessing we need:
Mercy-drops round us are falling,
But for the showers we plead.

There shall be showers of blessing,
Precious reviving again;
Over the hills and the valleys,
Sound of abundance of rain.

There shall be showers of blessing;
Send them upon us, O Lord;
Grant to us now a refreshing,
Come, and now honor Thy Word.

There shall be showers of blessing:
Oh, that today they might fall,
Now as to God we're confessing,
Now as on Jesus we call!

There shall be showers of blessing,
If we but trust and obey;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
If we let God have His way.

James McGranahan was born July 4, 1840, near Adamsville, Pennsylvania. His father, George McGranahan, was a farmer, and James grew up on the farm.

From 1861 - 1862 studied at the Normal Music School - Geneseo, New York, there he met Miss Addie Vickery, who became his wife. Addie was a accomplisted accompanist, and worked along side James in his institute, conventions and evangelistic work.

§  In 1862 he joined J. G. Towner, together they held conventions and made concert tours in Pennsylvania and New York.

§  In 1875 he accepted the position as one of the managers of Dr. Root's Normal Musical Institute, as director and teacher for three years.

§  He was a cultured musician, with a rare tenor voice characterized by strength and vigor. He becames one of the sweetest gospel singers of his time.

James and Addie worked together for eleven years with Major D. W. Whittle in evangelistic work in various parts of the United States, Great Britain, and Ireland.

Hymns that he had written include: "My Redeemer," "I Shall be Satisfied," "The Crowning Day," "Showers of Blessing," "O, How Love I Thy Law," "Sometime We'll Understand."

In 1887, Mr. James McGranahan's health caused him to give up the work in Evangelism. He retired in Kinsman, Ohio, and devoted himself, to the composing music for evangelistic work and continued to write a large number of hymns.

Mr. James McGranahan died July 9, 1907. He went home to meet the Saviour whom he loved so well, and served so faithfully.

Book Review...

Evidence Not Seen

The story of Darlene Diebler Rose as depicted in her book, Evidence Not Seen, was beautifully portrayed in a chalk drawing by our very own Christie Friestad to a group of ladies recently. As she drew the beautiful backdrop of mountains and glacial lakes, Christie told of Russell and Darlene Diebler who were called by God to go as missionaries to a primitive, rugged part of the world in New Guinea. Upon arriving August 18, 1938, the couple was filled with added excitement and anticipation as this was also their first wedding anniversary.

Many miles of extremely difficult walking over the rugged terrain brought Russell and Darlene to the people known as the Kapaukus. As they approached the top of the final mountain ridge, they looked down upon a valley of men, women, and children coming out of their gardens and huts, yodeling "Hoo! Hoo! Hoo!" as they ran toward them. Their excitement was infectious. These dark-skinned, scantily-clad Pygmy people were precious souls for whom Christ died. To Russell and Darlene, their new home of bamboo walls and floors and roof of tree bark felt like home.

As Christie told the story, we learned that the young newly-wed couple had only been with their people for a few months when they received the shocking news that Europe was entrenched in war. The place where they were living was also in danger and they were given the commission to leave for a safer location on the islands. Even though they had been with these precious people for a short time, some had already come to faith and were able to say by faith, "Jetot" (Jesus) died for me!" As they went back over the mountain range, they heard the words, "egaa Kedaa" (Return quickly).

Soon these little-known islands came to the attention of the whole world as one by one, they were attacked and all foreigners were evacuated. Feeling led to stay, Russell and Darlene were soon taken as prisoners of war. As the men and women were separated, Russell's last words to his young bride were, "Remember one thing, dear; God said that that He would never leave us nor forsake us." Darlene never saw her husband again.

During a particularly frightening experience, Darlene found comfort and courage in her darkened prison cell as she reviewed Scripture verses she had memorized. But as the soft light of the early morning hours appeared, her story reveals that suddenly and unexpectedly she felt enveloped in a spiritual vacuum. She searched her heart for a reason - perhaps unconfessed sin? After some time she prayed, "Lord, I believe all that the Bible says. I do walk by faith and not by sight (II Cor. 5:7). I do not need to feel you near, because your Word says you will never leave me nor forsake me." It was at this point that Hebrews 11:1 filled her mind, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Evidence not seen - that was what Darlene put her trust in - not in feelings or moments of ecstasy but in the unchanging Person of Jesus Christ.

My faith was strengthened as I heard Christie tell the story. Later, I read the story again of this couple, and especially how Darlene's life bore witness to God's watchful care over His own, even amidst the horrors of war. Her testimony and the triumph of faith through extreme hardships of loneliness and separation, cruelty and beatings, starvation and disease, imprisonment and deep sorrow gave evidence of the strength her Savior and Lord gave her to persevere.

As I watched Christie finish her beautiful chalk drawing, she turned off the lights and then began to project different light settings on her finished picture. Suddenly the form of the cross appeared in the middle of the picture enveloping and diminishing everything else, reminding us of the sufficiency of the cross and that "Nothing will separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:39). I highly recommend this book to you. It is a confirmation of the faithfulness of God to His own.

Fruits and Vegetables in Season

Spring
The fruit and vegetables that are in season between April and June include: apricots, Asian pears, basil, green beans, chard, cherries, collards, corn, cucumber, eggplants, figs, nectarines, okra, peaches, plums, potatoes, raspberries, spinach, summer squash, tomatoes, turnips, Valencia oranges.

Fruit & Vegetable Perennials

Perennials are plants, bushes, flowers or vegetables that live for several years. The plants may go dormant during the colder winter months but start to grow again when spring arrives. Usually perennials bloom once during the season and then set fruit, rather than blooming and producing all season long like annuals do.

Berries
Raspberries and blackberries grow on long canes that have sharp thorns, although a few thornless varieties have been bred. Both berries are fragile and easily damaged, so they are rather costly at the grocery when compared to strawberries and blueberries. Strawberries grow on plants that are only 12 inches high.

Rhubarb
Rhubarb is one of the few vegetables that grow in dense shade. Slice and cook with sugar and water for stewed rhubarb or bake in a pie. *Eat only the red stalks of this perennial and not any other part of the plant, since the leaves are toxic.

Asparagus
The stems of asparagus are edible. Once established, a bed will produce year after year, as long as it is not over-harvested the first few years. Harvest asparagus by cutting the stems at ground level when they are no more than 12 inches high. Steam and serve with lemon butter.

Grace girls (ages 8-12)

Jessica's house in Plymouth.

Join us for a monthly cup of tea while we learn about what it means to be girls after God's own heart.

In March our Rubies learned about using their hands to serve others and please the Lord. What did Jesus do with His hands? How can we bless others with our hands, like He did? After tea and Bible study, we ended the afternoon by pampering our hands with a scrub and lotion. It was lots of fun! Please let Jessica know if you can come, either by phone at (715) 309-8257 or email, Jessicapillman@gmail.com.

By Nancy Leigh Demoss and Dannah Gresh

For Junior and Senior High Girls

Have you been lied to, have you been deceived? Through a nationwide survey and in-depth discussion groups, Nancy and Danna have listened carefully to the heart of your generation. And here are some things they've heard:

§  "I know God should be the only thing that satisifies, but if it could choose between Him and my friends..., then I could be happy."

§  "It seems like I have been struggling with depression forever. I alway feel like I am not good enough."

§  "I tell myself that I don't really listen to the song lyrics, but once I hear a song a few titles and start thinking about what they're saying I realize that it's too late. It's already stuck in my head."

This book has been written by friends who will help you find the Truth. Maybe it is in the attitute of your heart where you get off course. In this book, Nancy and Dannah expose 25 of the lies most commonly believed by your generation. Real-life stories are shared from some of the young women they have interviewed, along with honest stories about how they've over come and the lies they believed themselves. Mission Moment

"Expect great things from God! Attempt great things for God!"

William Carey

Born in England, William Carey (1761-1834) was a Baptist missionary to India. A pastor before going to the mission field, he spent an active forty-one years serving the Lord in India, including translating the Scriptures into seven different languages, Mr. Carey wrote grammar and elementary books of all the languages he had acquired.

William Carey did many things to improve the social condition of the natives of India. The first reform he helped to effect was the prohibition of the sacrifice of children at the great annual festival at Gunga Sangor. Another reform to which Carey gave his determined attention was the abolition of burning widows on the pile of their dead husbands. He established 45 schools for the children, a leper hospital, a newspaper publication and he began a missionary training institute.

His great desire was "to be useful in laying the foundation of the Church of Christ in India" which he surely accomplished, and he wished for "no greater reward," "no higher honor." He died June 9, 1834.

Gals of Grace Connection - March

Glorious...

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not My ways," declares the Lord. "As the heavens are higher than the earth so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts" Isaiah 55:8-9

The Heavenʼs declare the Glory of God
Photoʼs; complements of Hubble telescope.

This past Christmas I received a book from friends, The Heavens Proclaim His Glory created and compiled by Lisa Stilwell. It is a spectacular view of creation through the lens of the Hubble Telescope. I was captivated, awestruck and to tell the truth, cognitively challenged at the shear magnitude of the universe we are part of. The universe is big. Really big. See if this excerpt from a sermon by Peter Budd, (2009) helps stretch your perspective.

We live on a modest planet circling a modest star off one of the spiral arms in the Milky Way galaxy. Our sun is one of perhaps 200 billion stars in the Milky Way. If we could travel at the speed of light, it would take us 100,000 years to cross our galaxy. And 2 1/2 million years to reach the next one - Andromeda. And there are probably more than 100 billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Wow, the universe is really, really big. Trying to contemplate all that is, and all that has been created gives rise to the big question: How big must God be? Reading through the first chapter of Genesis, the Bible tells step by step how God spoke it all into being. Our amazing, awesome God is so big, so powerful that what He utters, happens! During this season of Lent, this time of renewal, letʼs bask anew with awe and wonder, in the magnitude and incomprehensibility of a God whose thoughts and ways are higher - as the heavens are than the earth. May He lead our hearts to Worship Him.

Spiral Galaxy M100 The Crab Nebula is a supernova remnant, all that remains of a tremendous stellar explosion. Observers in China and Japan recorded the supernova in 1054 NGC 3603, a prominent starforming region in the Carina Spiral Arm of the Milky Way, about 20,000 light-years away God spoke this reminder to us through the prophet Isaiah 55:8-9, as well as to His people Israel declaring that His ways are not our ways. We are finite and bound by limits of time, space, understanding. He is above all power; majestic and limitless. We are sinful and our thoughts are tainted by imperfection. He alone is Perfect and Holy in all His ways.

John Macarthur speaks to the answers found in Genisis 1: "God made it all. He spoke the heavens and the earth into existence. Their vastness, their complexity, their beauty, and their sheer number all reveal the glory and wisdom of an all-powerful Creator. And they remind us how amazing it is that such a great Creator would lavish His grace and favor on the human race."

We know that Lent is a time for renewal and repentence. Romans 12:2 tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. "Yet many facets of God expand beyond our comprehension. He cannot be contained in this world, explained by our vocabulary, or grasped by our understanding" Francis Chan; Crazy Love. God is holy, distinct from us. "And because of His set apart-ness, there is no way we can ever fathom all of who He is." Isnʼt it a comfort to worship a God we cannot exaggerate?

The Hubble photos are a testimony to Psalm 19. The heavens donʼt speak Russian, Chinese, or English, but there is no language where they canʼt be heard. Deuteronomy 29:29 tells us "the secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of the law." To gaze at the photos from the Hubble is a bit like spying on the glories of heaven. King David ascribed glory to God in his psalm of thanks, found in 1Chronicles:16:26, 27 "...Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy in his dwelling place." God revealed Himself to David and promises to reveal Himself to us - who seek him with our whole heart and soul (Deut.4:29).

Godʼs wisdom can be known to the human heart only through revelation by Holy Spirit (Acts 2:10.14), through scripture reading and prayer. When the heart is responsive to Godʼs voice, through Scripture, the Holy Spirit makes even the deepest Bible truths meaningful, (regardless of a personʼs background.) Jesus as our Lord and Savior has given the Holy Spiritʼs help to all who ask for understanding and revelation of Himself in the Bible (John 14:17). The Holy scriptures along with the Holy Spirit guide us into all Truth.

"Come let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker" (Ps. 95:6). Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness" (Ps. 29:2). Gals of Grace, letʼs give ourselves permission to take the time to meditate on the words of our Lord - by standing, kneeling, or bowing in silent submission before a mighty fearsome God, whose tremendous worth becomes ever more apparent as we contemplate the bigness of His thoughts and ways - higher and loftier than the observed and unobservable heavens.

Hymn for the Month

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty

Composer Reginald Heber 1783-1826 was a Bishop in the Church of England. He wrote the hymn Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty in 1826 for Trinity Sunday celebration. After Heber's unexpected death at age 43, his wife found the song amongst some of his writings, and passed it on to noted musician John B. Dykes (1823-1876), who composed and arranged the hymn for publication.

Heber wrote the lyrics for 57 hymns. During his lifetime his most famous hymn was "From Greenland's Icy Mountains," which exhorted missionary efforts to be made in the more difficult and remote cultures and climates. The hymn that has stood the test of time on earth, and whose words echo the ongoing worship of heaven, is the beautiful Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty.

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in Three Persons, bless'd Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,
Which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see;
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in power, in love, and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy Name, in earth, and sky, and sea;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in Three Persons, bless'd Trinity!

"And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come." (Revelations 4:8)

Book Review...

The Table Experience by Devi Titus

§  Are you looking, maybe even longing, for deeper, more meaningful relationships?

§  Has the pace of life got you and your loved ones running in too many directions?

§  Do you find yourself living in a house with strangers?

The Table Experience will help you transform your home to a place of peace, a place where love lives, where relationships thrive and flourish.

Psychologists know that the table is an important factor to deeper relationships.

Devi Titus has effectively merged academic research with historical biblical research to reveal why eating at the table makes such a difference in relationships. Her deep insights and practical applications will stimulate your intellect and inspire your creativity.

When you apply the principles from the Table Experience, table get-togethers will become times when supernatural power deepens bonds and heals hearts, often in ways we don't realize. Let the legacy of your table be something worth passing on to future generations.

School and work, your kids' practices and games, even church and community events keep us busy from the time we wake up until we fall into bed at night. We sacrifice our finances, time, and energy for the sake of family; but what price are we paying? Thankfully there is a place we can gather and enjoy life...TOGETHER. It's at the table!

Terrific Table Talk

"Know therefore that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His lovingkindness to a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments." (Deut. 7:9).

Talking at the table is where most of our meaningful conversation happens. Pass on values and principles, convictions and character, doesn't happen by just eating a few special occasional meals together per year. Meaningful, character-strengthening conversation should happen regularly during a lifetime of sharing everyday meals together.

Conversation Starters

§  What is your biggest dream?

§  What is your biggest fear?

§  What does being popular mean to you?

§  What makes you smile?

§  What mistake has taught you the biggest lesson?

§  What has been the happiest day of your life?

§  What do you think heaven will be like?

§  How would you define rich?

§  How would you feel if someone surprised you with a party?

§  How do you like to spend your free time?

§  How has God shown you His love?

§  Tell about your favorite teacher?

§  Tell a story about a grandparent.

§  Tell about your salvation experience.

§  Tell a favorite church memory.

§  Define success.

§  Describe a time when you were brave.

§  Describe God.

§  What is the first thing you would do if you were given a thousand dollars?

§  If you could rename yourself, what name would you choose.

Try some of these conversation starters and then create your own. Make your questions age-appropriate to those who will be eating at your table. You may ask your children to compose one question for the family and let them take lead in the conversation.

Make your table a place of warm conversation, encouraging interaction, joyful exchanges, and loving acceptance.

Practical Proverbs

THE FEAR OF THE LORD IS THE BEGINNING OF WISDOM

Proverbs are "nuggets of truth" many written by King Solomon of Israel in the book of Proverbs, David's son Solomon wrote them to teach his people how to live and how to act in every circumstance, for he wanted them to be understanding, just and fair in everything they did.

"Know wisdom and instruction. Take hold of instruction; let her not go. Guard her, for she is your life." Proverbs 4:13

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2

A renewed mind is the mind of Christ. And, we get the mind of Christ by reading His word, talking to Jesus, and asking Him for wisdom.

"Wisdom is the ability to view life as God perceives it." Chuck Swindoll

"How does a man become wise?" By complete submission to God's instruction. To trust and reverence the Lord! Only fools refuse to be taught.

"The works of His hands are truth and justice; All His precepts are sure. They are upheld forever and ever; they are performed in truth and uprightness. He has sent redemption to His people; He has ordained His covenant forever; Holy and awesome is His name. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding has all those who do His commandments; His praise endures forever." Psalm 111:7-10.

"The fear of the Lord is to hate evil." Proverbs 8:13

"For the evil man has no future; the lamp of the wicked will be put out" Proverbs 24:20.

"A worthless person, a wicked man, goes about with crooked speech, winks with his eyes, signals with his feet, points with his finger, with perverted heart devises evil, continually sowing discord; therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly; in a moment he will be broken beyond healing." Proverbs 6:12-15

The Proverbs teach us to discern between good and bad influences...

"Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old" Proverbs 23:22.

"Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future. Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand" Proverbs 19:20-21.

"God ordained the family not just to be fruitful and fill the earth with people, but to fill the earth with instructed people and taught people. The family is the place where the next generation is born and where the next generation learns how to live." John Piper

Teach your children practical proverbs...God's wisdom to right living......

"Daughters of the King"

Progressive Dinner Night

Moms and daughters of Grace had a royal evening last month at our "Daughters of the King" progressive dinner. The evening started out in one of three host homes (thank you Judy Dyrud, Karen Floan, Jessica Pillman), where our ladies dined on a hot lasagna supper. Our cheerful volunteers waited on us hand and foot, and some of them even put of royal costumes for the occasion! There were games, and around the table discussion on what it mean to be a princess.

There were lots of ideas on what makes a princess...Is it where she lives? Her clothing? Her honor guard? Her crown? We learned the most important thing that makes a royal princess is WHO she is related to...the King!

It was time for our progressive dinner to keep moving, and everyone ended up at the AFLC campus chapel, where the dining room had been transformed into a glowing, candlelit reception. Mothers (and some grandmothers) and daughters had special pictures taken together before sitting down to be served delicious delicacies from the kitchen staff. Evening activities included a princess story, "The Princess and the Kiss," read by Miss Elizabeth Lackey, jewelry making, and a special message by Mrs. Joyce Erickson. Our heart was to make every activity focus on our position as daughters of Christ, and what it means to shine for Him in purity and commitment. One of my favorite comments from the evening came from Lily..."Thank you for teaching me how to be a princess."

The truth is, the evening was a great reminder for me too... I'm a daughter of the King of Kings and I can look on all the details of my life from a different perspective because of Who I am related to.

Many thanks to the fabulous team of women who put many hours of work into organizing, feeding, cleaning, decorating, writing, thinking, and praying for this event. It was a success in every way, and a special memory for our girls to carry for many years to come.

Recipe of the Month

How to Make Authentic Tamales

Tamales are one of the heartiest, healthiest, cheapest foods one can make.

Things You'll Need
* Masa dough or dried masa flour
* Corn oil
* Garlic powder
* Salt
* Meat
* Chile sauce, bottled or canned
* A large food steamer or a large kettle with a broiler
rack.
* A large pot

This recipe makes about 3 dozen.

1.     Cook your meat, about three pounds of meat. Use any kind of meat you want inside them. Some common meats are pork, turkey, chicken, and beef. Boil the meat in a large pot for about two hours until it's tender. You want the meat come apart extremely easily and fall off the bone. After the meat is completely cooked, let it cool, and pick it apart by hand in a large bowl. Be extra careful and make sure to remove any fat or bones. Save the broth. You will use it for the dough. Keep it warm if possible.

2.     Add chile sauce to the bowl of shredded meat. Do not use chunky salsa. The best sauce is completely pureed and contains tomato, onion, chile peppers, and garlic. When adding the sauce, add about 1/2 cup at a time. You want to add enough sauce so the meat is moist, usually about 2 cups for 3 lbs. of meat.

3.     Soak your corn husks in your sink in hot water. Put them in the water for about 20 minutes then carefully separate them, then leave them in the water for about an hour more. Move them around occasionally and re-heat the water as necessary.

4.     Measure out about two pounds Maseca or equivalent corn dough flour. Not Cornmeal. Add about a teaspoon of salt and a teaspoon of garlic powder; mix well. Then add two cups corn oil. Mix in oil, then add 2 quarts of the broth that you saved from the meat-cooking step. Add it in eight one-cup increments to control the consistency of your dough. Add liquid until the dough is spreadable, approximately the consistency of peanut-butter. You will probably have to add small amounts of hot water during the tamale-making process to re-moisturize the dough.

5.     Separate your corn husks and choose ones are 5"-6" wide and viable. Spread a layer of dough on 2/3 of the corn husk, going right up to the edge of the wide end. Leave the narrow end free of dough as well. Add a spoonful of meat to the middle and roll the tamale up like a newspaper so you have a continuous envelope of dough around the meat. Fold the narrow end over and place the tamale in the steamer. Repeat until you run out of corn husks, dough, or meat.

6.     Steam the tamales for about two hours, making sure the water in your steamer never goes dry. (four or five inches of water in the bottom of your pot or steamer.) After two hours, remove a tamale and eat it; make sure the dough is cooked completely and slides easily off of the corn husk wrapper.

How to Make Mittens From Wool Sweaters

Reuse an old wool sweater to make mittens.
Wool stays warm even in the wettest conditions, shedding water better than most other fibers. Mittens are relatively easy to make, due to the rounded, simple shape. With a few basic sewing materials, making warm, snuggly wool mittens is a task that can be completed in less than an hour.

Things You'll Need

§  Tracing paper

§  Marker

§  Scissors

§  Wool sweater

§  Pins

§  Sewing machine

§  Thread

§  Sewing needle

§  Making a Pattern

Place one hand (palm down) onto the surface of the tracing paper with fingers spread slightly. Trace around the hand and upper wrist, keeping the line rounded and about a half-inch away from the skin. Do not conform the line to the shape of the fingers; mittens have a rounded tip. End the line so that it reaches about two inches down the wrist. Cut out the drawn shape with scissors. This will be the pattern.

Turn the wool sweater inside-out and place on a flat surface. Cut up the side seams of the sweater to create two flaps. Then, cut across the top of the flaps to remove the square of sweater from the bust and sleeves of the sweater.

Lay the sweater pieces on a flat surface. Set the pattern onto one of the pieces with the thumb pointing to the right and pin it into place. Do this by pinning all around the inner rim of the tracing paper.

Cut the first wool piece out by cutting around the pattern. Unpin the pattern and flip it so that the thumb is pointing to the left. Pin it on the remaining piece of wool in the same manner, then cut out the mitten shape. Repeat for the second mitten.

Pin two mitten shapes together to create each mitten. Make sure the edges are aligned, then pin around the inner edge to hold them together. Both pieces of mitten should be inside-out.

Ensure the appropriate needle is being used. For lightweight wool, use a 60/8 needle. Medium-weight wool requires a 70/10 to 80/12 needle, while a 90/14 needle is ideal for heavyweight wool.

Sew around the edges of the mitten about a quarter-inch from the edge. Leave the end of the wrist open. Repeat this for the second mitten.

Sew around the seam allowance edge of the mitten. The seam allowance is the quarter-inch of wool that extends past the sewing line. Stick the needle right above the sewing line, then bring it up and over the seam allowance. Then, stick the needle through the opposite side about an eighth-inch from the first hole. Repeat this until the entire seam allowance is finished for both mittens. Turn the mittens right-side out to wear.

A Good Cup of Coffee

1.     Clean your coffee pot thoroughly. Residue can burn and heavily affect the taste of your coffee.

2.     Use freshly roasted beans and store them properly. Only purchase what you need for a week or two. Store your beans in an air-tight container. Or seal them in a freezer bag and store them in the freezer.

3.     Grind only what you will use to keep the rest of your beans fresh until you're ready for them.

4.     Pour cold, filtered water into your pot in the measure that you need. The quality of the water you use is important.

5.     Use brown or gold filters that don't have dyes and other chemicals that can come out in the coffee.

6.     Measure about 2 tbsp. of coffee for every 6 oz. of water.

7.     Turn on the machine. When the brew is complete, drink your coffee immediately. Coffee starts losing its flavor minutes after it's brewed.

How to Use a Humidifier Safely

Humidifiers are good for addressing physical problems such as dry skin, nose, throat or lips. Adding humidity to your home can prevent other problems, including furniture cracks, paint cracks, static electricity or peeling wallpaper. Although humidifiers are relatively easy to use, improper use of these units can lead to health issues such as allergy problems.

1.     Use "distilled" for your humidifier. Distilled water has less mineral content than tap water. Tap water minerals can increase the development of scale in the humidifier, which actually can serve as a breeding ground for microorganisms.

2.     If your humidifier comes with demineralization devices such as filters, cassettes or cartridges, use them according to the manufacturer's devices. Make sure no white dust appears on surfaces in the room in which you are using the humidifier unit, which likely means the demineralization devices are not removing the minerals.

3.     Unplug your humidifier from the electrical outlet and empty the unit's tank every 1-3 days so that microorganisms have a lower chance of growing. Use a brush to scrub any crusty deposits or film on the tank's sides and wipe the surfaces dry with a rag before refilling the tank with water. If you want to use a cleaning product on the tank, purchase a 3 percent solution of hydrogen peroxide. Thoroughly rinse the hydrogen peroxide out of the tank after you are finished cleaning it so that the chemical will not be released into the air when you restart your humidifier.

4.     Keep the humidifier away from children. Boiling water and steam can cause burns. Also, stop using the humidifier and contact your doctor if you begin to have respiratory problems linked to the times you are using your humidifier.

5.     Buy a hygrometer from a local hardware store to test the humidity level in your home. Do not use the humidifier if the house humidity level is above 50 percent, as the humidifier simply will produce more moisture that can lead to biological organism growth such as that of molds and dust mites. Watch to ensure water does not condense on walls, windows or pictures. Make sure curtains and carpets also do not become damp. If this occurs, use the dehumidifier less often or turn it down.

6.     Dry all parts of the humidifier before storing the unit in a dry location once you are finished using it. Discard any unused demineralization devices such as filters as well.

Your Love O Lord...

"May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. .you have been taught by God to love each other." ~I Thess 3:12& 4:9~

Paul, previously known as Saul was a man full of hate. He had so much hatred in him that he was hunting down Christians to imprison them. That is until God got his attention. On the road to Damascus Saul was blinded and God spoke to him. He must have experienced a powerful dose of God's love and grace, for after his sight returned, he went at once to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God. He did not stop there, however, but also began to share with the Gentiles, traveling wherever God led him, and sharing God's love despite persecution. One of the places he started a church was in Thessalonica. He described his work there: "We were gentle among you, like a mother caring for her little children. We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us." (1 Thess. 2:7-8) Wow. What a loving ministry and heart for others!

When God pours His unconditional love on us, it is meant to overflow back out of us towards others, a chain reaction that passes love from one person to another, to another. It surely worked that way with the Thessalonians. Paul had to leave that city due to persecution, but as soon as he could, he sent Timothy to check on the new believers there. The report was one of "good news about [their] faith and love" (1 Thess. 3:6), despite the fact that they were enduring persecution as very new Christians. Paul writes "about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other." (1 Thess. 4:9) New Christians standing strong and exhibiting God's love. How is that possible? Because God Himself taught them His amazing love. That's the key. It was not Paul's work that allowed God's love to spread to the Thessalonians. It was God's work. The Thessalonians were taught by GOD to love each other, just as Paul himself was taught by God how to love others. God has to fill us up with His love before we are able to share his love with others.

What can we, the Gals of Grace, do to share the love of God? First, we can pray. Paul knew God's love was present among the Thessalonians, and yet he still prayed that their love would "increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else." We have to pray and continue to pray for a contagious kind of love to grab ahold of each one of us, and once it does, that it would grow more and more. Secondly, each of us individually must allow ourselves to be filled with God's love. God can only fill that heart that is emptied of pride and opened up before him. We must repent of our sins, open our hearts to God, and fill our minds with His word and with the encouragement of other Christians. Thirdly, once we are filled, we must share the love we have experienced! We have to care for one another and share God's love with each other until everyone's needs are met, everyone's hearts are filled to overflowing with God's love, and that love flows out of our church and down the street and across town to everyone we meet. This is no small challenge, and I admit that I often do not dare to have the kind of love that reaches beyond my comfort zone to share my heart with others outside my regular circle of friends. It is so easy to hide behind our kids, family or friends, or within our tasks for the day, but let's all take the time this February to reach out when God's love is speaking to us, and to share it with others. Let's go beyond the niceties of Valentine's Day this February and dare to live the love that God has shown us. For "they will know we are Christians by our love."

"May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. .you have been taught by God to love each other." ~I Thess 3:12& 4:9~

Hymn for the Month

"Blessed Assurance"

1873 by Fanny J. Crosby and Phoebe P. Knapp.

"Blessed Assurance" is a well-known Christian hymn. The lyrics were written in 1873 by blind hymn writer Fanny J. Crosby to the music written in 1873 by Phoebe P. Knapp. Crosby was visiting her friend Phoebe Knapp as the Knapp home was having a large pipe organ installed. The organ was incomplete, so Mrs. Knapp, using the piano, played a new melody she had just composed. "What do you think the tune says?" asked Knapp.

"Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine",
answered Fanny Crosby.

The hymn appeared in the July 1873 issue of Palmer's Guide to Holiness and Revival Miscellany, a magazine printed by Dr. and Mrs. W. C. Palmer of 14 Bible House, New York City. It appeared on page 36 (the last page) with complete text and piano score, and indicated it had been copyrighted by Crosby that year. It is not certain that this was the first printing of the hymn, but it certainly helped to popularize what became one of the most beloved hymns of all time.

Frances Jane Crosby (March 24, 1820 - February 12, 1915), usually known as Fanny Crosby in the United States and by her married name, Frances van Alstyne, in the United Kingdom, was an American Methodist rescue mission worker, poet, lyricist, and composer. During her lifetime, she was well-known throughout the United States. By the end of the 19th century, she was "a household name in evangelical Protestant circles" globally, and "one of the most prominent figures in American evangelical life." She became blind while an infant.

Best known for her Protestant Christian hymns and gospel songs, Crosby was "the premier hymnist of the gospel song period (ca. 1870-1920)", and one of the most prolific hymnists in history, writing over 8000, with over 100 million copies of her songs printed Crosby was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1975. Known as the "Queen of Gospel Song Writers", and as the "Mother of modern congregational singing in America", with "dozens of her hymns continue to find a place in the hymnals of Protestant evangelicalism around the world", with most American hymnals containing her work, as "with the possible exception of Isaac Watts and Charles Wesley, Crosby has generally been represented by the largest number of hymns of any writer of the twentieth century in nonliturgical hymnals". Her gospel songs were "paradigmatic of all revival music", and Ira Sankey attributed the success of the Moody and Sankey evangelical campaigns largely to Crosby's hymns. Some of Crosby's best-known songs include "Blessed Assurance", "Pass Me Not, O Gentle Saviour", "Jesus Is Tenderly Calling You Home", "Praise Him, Praise Him", "Rescue the Perishing", and "To God Be the Glory". Because some publishers were hesitant to have so many hymns by one person in their hymnals, Crosby used nearly 200 different pseudonyms during her career.

Crosby wrote over 1,000 secular poems, and had four books of poetry published, as well as two best-selling autobiographies. Crosby was the subject of at least a dozen biographies. Additionally, Crosby co-wrote popular secular songs, as well as political and patriotic songs, and at least five cantatas on biblical and patriotic themes, including The Flower Queen, the first secular cantata by an American composer. Crosby was committed to Christian rescue missions, and was known for her public speaking.

"Blessed Assurance"

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

Refrain: This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long;
this is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long.

Perfect submission, perfect delight!
Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels descending bring from above
Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
(Refrain)

Perfect submission, all is at rest!
I in my Savior am happy and blest,
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with his goodness, lost in His love.
(Refrain)

Book Review...

The Resolution for Women by Pricilla Shirer

I'm sure many of you saw the movie Courageous at some point since it came out in theaters, or more recently on DVD. If you have, you might be familiar with one of the companion books published with it; The Resolution for Women by Pricilla Shirer. Just as the men in Courageous are challenged in the movie to truly become the men God intended them to be, this book challenges women to do the same thing.

The book is split into short chapters in three parts, "This Is Who I Am," "This Is What I Have," and "This Is What Matters To Me", which makes it easy to pick up and read to fit into our busy lives. In fact Shirer encourages taking your time reading through the book. She urges readers to take time to consider each section and to answer the questions at the end of the chapters. This isn't a book to just get through, but to mull over, taking time to prayerfully consider each Resolution. Because, while the chapters may be quick and easy, the topics are anything but. They WILL challenge you. inspire you. and convict you. They are not topics or resolutions to be considered lightly.

While I would love to talk about all the wonderful insights within the book, I think it might just be easier for you to read the book for yourself. But here are a few quotes to highlight some of the points Shirer makes:

"Maybe it feels as if choosing contentment is a simultaneous choice to quell your desires and silence your future aspirations, to quit ever hoping for more. On the contrary, contentment is the equilibrium between the enjoyment of life now and the anticipation of what is to come."

"the most powerful right of all women: the right to yield to appropriate authority willingly and with dignity."

"our true, lasting value must be based on something besides the visible and exterior."

"She's not willing to sit idly by while other people and cultural paradigms tamper with her children's mind-sets, disrupting the soul's transformation."

"When we ignore God's priorities and make unwise, self-centered decisions without concern for others, we take a hammer to the legacy we'll leave behind."

As Shirer writes, "This is about what you will do, what you will become by God's grace from this day forward. This is the Resolution for WOMEN. More specifically, one woman. You." "It's a revolution. One that will affect your life in every way." Regardless of the phase in life you are in, being single, being married, being a mother/grandmother; I highly recommend making the time to read this!

Delicious meals were served at the hostess homes of Judy Dyrud, Jessica Pillman, and Karen Floan, assisted by Rebekah Dyrud, Mary Jo Dyrud, and Gwen Berge. Christie Friestad, Jessica Pillman, and Joyce Erickson shared on the topic of purity at each home.

Everyone met together for beverages and desserts at the chapel building lower level, which was beautifully decorated in a Princess theme (thanks to Karen Westlake, Judy Dyrud and others). After desserts, we enjoyed hearing "Princess" Liz Lackey read "The Princess and the Kiss" story, made beautiful necklaces or bookmarks (designed by Karen Westlake and assisted by Jane Rasmussen) with charms that symbolized key elements from the story and the message brought by Joyce Erickson entitled "The Princess' Past Royal Sacrifice, Present Royal Calling, & Future Royal Inheritance."

A huge thank you to those listed above, as well as Marilee Johnson (beverage coordinator), Katrin Winkelmann (dessert coordinator) and dessert servers, Judy Franz, Diane Brubakken, and Dani Handsaker, and many others who donated food, money, time and talents. It was amazing to see the efforts of so many working together to make this event so special!

Thanks Gals of Grace!

Rubies

Girls 8 and up are invited to Rubies.

It is a sweet time of fellowship with other girls of Grace. They enjoy tea time, a Scripture activity and craft. During January the girls attended the "Daughters of the King" dinner. The main topic was "purity" and the girls were encouraged to live a life pleasing to God.

Rubies is led by three special ladies who have a heart for ministry to girls: Christie Friestad, AFLC Home Missions, Administrative Assistant; Jessica Pillman, a registered nurse working at the Minnesota Birth Center in St. Paul; and Rachael Ballmann, an AFLBS Jr. and is a part-time nanny for two little girls.

Valentine Craft

Just like their edible cousins, these foam conversation hearts will let your child get right to the point of her Valentine's messages.

Materials
Scissors
Craft foam
Permanent markers
Pipe cleaner
Pencil

Instructions
Cut a 1 to 2-inch heart from craft foam. With a permanent marker, print a short message on the front and the name of the giver on back.
Now poke an inch of the pipe cleaner through the bottom of the heart, bend it down, and twist it back around the remaining length of pipe cleaner.

Coil the pipe cleaner tightly around the pencil. Then gently pull up on the heart so that part of the coil bobs freely above the pencil, with several loops anchored around the eraser end.

Healthy Tips...for a healthy you.

Start your day with breakfast.
Easy to prepare breakfasts include cold cereal with fruit and low-fat milk, whole-wheat toast with peanut butter, yogurt with fruit, whole-grain waffles or even last night's pizza!

Get Moving!
Make an effort to add physical activities into your daily routine. Walk, bike or jog to see friends. Take a 10-minute activity break every hour. Climb stairs instead of taking an escalator or elevator. Try to do these things for a total of 30 minutes every day.

Snack smart.
Choose snacks from different food groups - a glass of low-fat milk and a few graham crackers, an apple or celery sticks with peanut butter and raisins, or some dry cereal. If you eat smart at other meals, cookies, chips and candy are OK for occasional snacking.

Work up a sweat.
Vigorous work-outs - when you're breathing hard and sweating - help your heart pump better, give you more energy and help you look and feel best. Start with a warm-up that stretches your muscles. Include 20 minutes of aerobic activity, such as running, jogging, or dancing. Follow-up with activities that help make you stronger such as push-ups or lifting weights. Then cool-down with more stretching and deep breathing.

Balance your food choices.
You don't have to give up foods like hamburgers, french fries and ice cream to eat healthy. You just have to be smart about how often and how much of them you eat. Your body needs nutrients like protein, carbohydrates, fat and many different vitamins and minerals such as vitamins C and A, iron and calcium from a variety of foods. Balancing food choices from the Food Guide Pyramid and checking out the Nutrition Facts Panel on food labels will help you get all these nutrients.

Get fit with friends or family.
Being active is much more fun with friends or family. Encourage others to join you and plan one special physical activity event, like a bike ride or hiking, with a group each week.

Eat more grains, fruits and vegetables.
These foods give you carbohydrates for energy, plus vitamins, minerals and fiber. Besides, they taste good! Try breads such as whole-wheat, bagels and pita. Spaghetti and oatmeal are also in the grain group. Bananas, strawberries and melons are some great tasting fruits. Try vegetables raw, on a sandwich or salad.

Join in physical activities at school.
Whether you take a physical education class or do other physical activities at school or community program, such as intramural sports, structures activities are a sure way to feel good, look good and stay physically fit.

Foods aren't good or bad.
A healthy eating style is like a puzzle with many parts. Each part -- or food -- is different. Some foods may have more fat, sugar or salt while others may have more vitamins or fiber. There is a place for all these foods. What makes a diet good or bad is how foods fit together. Balancing your choices is important. Fit in a higher-fat food, like pepperoni pizza, at dinner by choosing lower-fat foods at other meals. And don't forget about moderation. If two pieces of pizza fill you up, you don't need a third.

Make healthy eating and physical activities fun!
Take advantage of physical activities you and your friends and family enjoy doing together and eat the foods you like. Be adventurous - try new sports, games and other activities as well as new foods. You'll grow stronger, play longer, and look and feel better!

Lies Young Girls Believe Study

By Nancy Leigh Demoss and Dannah Gresh

For Junior and Senior High Girls

Have you been lied to, have you been deceived? Through a nationwide survey and in-depth discussion groups, Nancy and Danna have listened carfully to the heart of your generation. And here are some things they've heard:

§  "I know God should be the only thing that satisifies, but if it could choose between Him and my friends..., then I could be happy."

§  "It seems like I have been struggling with depression forever. I alway feel like I am not good enough"

They get down in the trenches of the battle with you. Best of all, they'll show you how to be set free and know the Truth.
Teenage girls are welcome to come to this new study "Lies Young Girls Believe." This study will begin in February. Watch for more details on date and location.
