Lasting Change for the New Year

There is something about a new year that causes us to pause and reflect a little. As we think about where we have been and where we are headed it helps us gain perspective. It encourages us to make some needed changes in our lives that will enable us to be more fruitful for the Lord.

But as we think about the need for change we must be aware that any lasting change will not be accomplished in the power of the flesh. New Year's resolutions will be abandoned quickly if we buy into the self-help philosophy of our day. The only lasting change comes when God is at work in us, making us more like Jesus.

As you approach a new year take to heart Jesus' words to His disciples.

"I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing" (John 15:5).

Life Changing Message

The Holiness of God , R.C. Sproul

Adult Bible Study Wednesday evenings - 6:30 p.m.

"When people ask me to name the Ligonier teaching material they should use to help them grow; I tell them, ?You should start with The Holiness of God.'" "This series is a game-changer! Everything in our lives and ministries begins and ends with a soul-gripping awareness of God's infinite holiness. This dramatic series, is a high-impact presentation that reveals what the holiness of God is and how it should revolutionize our lives." ?R.C. Sproul

Now celebrating 25 years of publication, this classic can help you better understand the biblical picture of God's awesome holiness and why it is so foundational to God-centered, God-honoring theology and Christian living. In The Holiness of God , R.C. Sproul demonstrates that encountering God's holy presence is a terrifying experience. Dr. Sproul argues that this struggle is nonetheless necessary because it is the only way to cure our propensity to trust in ourselves and our own righteousness for salvation. Praise be to God for this insightful ministry.

Join us Wednesday evenings in the Library.....

Faith Search Discovery

Please come on a journey as we dive into the questions regarding our Faith in Jesus Christ! We will be using Don Bierle's Faith Search material looking at questions like:

  • Why Am I Here?
  • Can I Believe the Bible?
  • Is Jesus Really God?
  • Can Faith Be Reasonable?
  • And How Can I Know God?

Along with this we will look closely at evidence for the Resurrection and consider the question...

  • What if Jesus Had Never Been Born?

Come with an open heart, with all the questions your mind can muster, and with a desire to search for truth by looking at the evidence!

Minnesota Teen Challenge Choir

Sunday, January 22, 10:30 a.m.

One of the ways Minnesota Teen Challenge reaches out to area churches and the community is through our resident choir. Each weekend the choir visits churches sharing music and testimonies. The MnTC choir has had the pleasure of ministering to a wide variety of churches in Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Our goal is to be a blessing to congregations by testifying about God's healing power in our lives and helping others see that with Him, they too, can overcome their struggles.

The choir's music style varies greatly, ranging from contemporary gospel songs such as, "This is How it Feels to Be Free," to worshipful hymns like, "I Was Made to Worship You."

Some of the past MNTC Choir special events include: singing for the Minnesota House of Representatives, singing the national anthem at Twins games, and several special shows at many conferences, outdoor events and fairs.

Join us for this special morning of praise and testimony with MnTC Choir. A meal will be served following the service. Please bring a dessert to share.

"Daughters of the King"

Progressive Dinner

Sunday, January 29, 2012

girls ages 8 and older and their Moms

"In a world that flaunts perversion and scoffs at purity, women of God must be willing to go against the flow?to walk in purity and to teach their daughters the importance and value of a commitment to personal and moral virtue." (Nancy Leigh DeMoss) In Titus 2:3-5 (NIV), older women are mandated to teach and train younger women to be pure.

The Grace Women's Ministry Team is excited to sponsor a "Daughters of the King Progressive Dinner" on the evening of January 29, 2012 for girls ages 8 and up and their Moms. We are hopeful that this will be an excellent opportunity to counteract the culture's messages which disregard purity and modesty and infuse Biblical truth, encouraging our girls to embrace purity and pursue an intimate relationship with Christ. It is our prayer that each of you as Women of Grace will want to "come on board" and take an active role in mentoring our younger women in this way.

We have already gotten volunteers for four hostess homes (possibly five depending on the RSVP response) and are seeking others to help provide food (a lasagna, a bread and a salad for each of the hostess homes), an assistant at each hostess home to help serve the meal and clean up, donations of money for the craft and decorating at AFLTS (where the finale will be held), and providing prayer coverage for the event. If you would like to sign up for any of these areas, please contact Mary Jo at the church office. Thank you!

Mission Sunday Presentation

Distant Shores Media

Sunday, January 15, 9:00 a.m.
Presented by Ben Jore

Distant Shores Media was founded in 2003 as a ministry focused on providing training, consultation and support services for Christian radio stations in Eastern Europe. Staff and volunteers with experience in everything from operations to transmitters to broadcast programming worked on-site with staff from radio stations in numerous European countries to help them improve and expand their radio ministry.
The ministry has since expanded to include countries all over the world. In the last few years, we have also expanded our focus to cover mobile phone and web technology as well as radio broadcast. When we look at the world, we see a need that demands a response and an incredible opportunity.

A Need
In people groups all over the world, new believers want to learn to be disciples of Christ, but they do not have the opportunity to do so. They need access to discipleship materials and resources in their own language that enable them to grow in spiritual maturity. Though thousands of discipleship resources exist in some common languages, many are under copyright and so cannot be legally translated, adapted and freely redistributed without restriction. The global church needs to be equipped with open discipleship tools.

Our Response
We are creating legally unrestricted discipleship resources that equip believers everywhere in the world, in any language, to grow as disciples of Christ. We are making the resources available on the Internet, on mobile devices and in print as well as multimedia formats.dsmedia.org Distant Shores Media is focused on helping the global church to grow in maturity as disciples of Christ. We do this in a number of ways, including leadership training, providing consulting services and infrastructure development.

Leadership Training
One of our most important areas of service is in cross-cultural leadership training. We focus on character development and spiritual transformation, as well as teaching Biblical principles of leadership and business management. Our goal is to help enable our brothers and sisters in Christ around the world to know the love of God, to be equipped to train others to grow in discipleship, and to be humble and effective leaders in their communities.

Consulting Services
One of our greatest joys is helping Christian organizations and ministries around the world to overcome obstacles that hinder them from accomplishing their ministry objectives. To that end, we provide consultative support for ministries in broadcast, information technology and other fields.

Infrastructure development
Making the most of the new opportunities God puts before each of us often requires developing innovative tools and technical infrastructure that makes it possible to use these opportunities to the fullest. We focus on developing tools that are both free of charge and legally unrestricted so that they can be used without hindrance by anyone, anywhere.

Take a Stand! Ministries

with Eric Barger

Sunday, January 15

"We exist to see the Lost Saved and the Church Changed by the Power of Jesus Christ!"
After spending two decades immersed in the world as a record producer, rock musician, drug addict, and New Ager, Eric Barger is now widely recognized in the area of Christian Apologetics and Discernment Ministry. Eric's Take A Stand! Ministries confronts both the culture and the Church, focusing on the Cults, World Religions, the Occult, Spiritual Warfare, and, most particularly, the troubling unbiblical trends and doctrinal issues facing Christians in these end days.
He is the author of numerous books, including the best-seller From Rock to Rock, Entertaining Spirits Unaware: The End-Time Occult Invasion (with co-author David Benoit) and Disarming the Powers of Darkness. Eric has written for USA Today and has been interviewed by hundreds of print and electronic media outlets, including Time Magazine and Fox News. His articles are now syndicated on dozens of biblically-based prophetic and apologetics websites and blogs.
Eric has been a featured guest on many Christian and secular programs, such as Southwest Radio Ministries, Christ in Prophecy with Dr. David Reagan, Understanding the Times with Jan Markell, Point of View with the late Marlin Maddoux, Unraveling the New World Order with Dr Larry Bates, TCT Network's Rejoice, and Canada's 100 Huntley Street. In September, 2011, Eric's own radio broadcast "Take A Stand! with Eric Barger" began airing on over 400 outlets across North America each week.
October, 2011, marks the beginning of Eric Barger's 29th year of full-time apologetics and discernment ministry.
Each year he travels more than 200 days across the US and Canada presenting his multi-media "Take A Stand!" Seminars in conferences, churches, and Christian schools. With Evangelicals continuing to steadily slide into doctrinal chaos, Eric Barger is a voice of biblically-based reason -- and warning. Besides refuting unscriptural ecumenism, universalism, the normalization of Islam and Mormonism, and popular yet problematic fads such as the novel, The Shack, one recent focus of Eric and Take
A Stand! has been an understandable expose' and dialog concerning the heretical Emergent Church movement.
His messages on this topic have become the most requested live seminars and video teachings Take A Stand! has ever produced.
Eric Barger is an ordained minister with United Evangelical Churches. He serves on the executive and advisory boards of ministries such as Jan Markell's Olive Tree Ministries, Columbia River Fellowship, Steering Wheel Ministries and the apologetics group, Saints Alive in Jesus. Eric and his wife, Melanie, have two grown daughters and four terrific grandchildren.

The Child With Many Names

If you read Matthew's account of the birth of Jesus you will notice that Mary's child had many different names. He is called Immanuel, and Jesus, and the King of the Jews, as well as a ruler and a shepherd. Each one of these names gives us a little different picture of who this child is that the Magi came to worship.

Jesus means "Savior." He came to be God for us. In going to the cross He laid down his life for us.

Immanuel means "God with us." Because He took on human flesh he understands us. He was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.

As the King of the Jews Jesus is God over us. We willingly bow at his feet, acknowledging that He has the right to reign over us.

As our shepherd Jesus is God beside us in all the experiences of life. He feeds us and protects us from danger as we look to Him each day.

We pray that during this Advent season you would take the time to meditate on the names of our Lord. His names are important because they help us to understand who He is and what He desires to do in our lives.

As a family we thank you for the many ways you have shown your love to us this past year. You have been a great source of encouragement. May God bless you as you celebrate the coming of our Savior.

The Westlake Family

Todd and Karen Westlake have been members of Grace (then Medicine Lake Lutheran) since 1993, but their history goes back to the mid - 80's when they both were going to school at AFLBS and frequently attended services while on campus.

After graduating from Bible school in 1984, they remained in the Twin Cities area to attend college and were married in 1986. Currently they reside in Rogers and have three sons. Kyle is in his second year at North Hennepin Community College following a year at AFLBS and is seriously considering his father's career path. He is engaged to Holly Foy and they will be married this July. He plays the bass guitar on the Praise and Worship team at Grace. Luke is a junior at AFLBS and has plans to pursue a career in the field of medicine. He enjoys singing with the Praise and Worship team and can be found at the soundboard during the service from time to time as well. Zachary attends Heritage and is in the 6th grade. He especially has enjoyed having his dad as his Sunday school teacher over the last two years.

Todd is an orthotist
prosthetist (fitting braces and artificial limbs) and has worked in the Twin Cities for the past 20 years, starting his own business 3 years ago. In addition to teaching the 5th-6th grade Sunday school class at Grace, he also serves on the mission committee and is a member of the school board of Heritage Christian Academy. After working in the field of interior design and sales for many years, Karen, has spent the last eleven, being a stay-at-home mom. She enjoys volunteering at HCA, singing with the praise team and choir at Grace, and serves on the mission and women's ministry committees.

An interesting bit of history that some may know, is that Pastor Franz served his internship at Todd's church in Eben Junction, MI, when Todd was in high school. The Westlakes' are grateful for the blessing to be shepherded by Pastor once again and are so thankful for the fellowship at Grace and God's faithfulness to their family over the years.

Outreach Ministry at Crystal Center Center

A blessed experience...

Crystal Care has been a long-standing tradition for the Grace Free Lutheran Youth Group. For anyone who may not know, Crystal Care is a nursing home in Crystal. The youth group has been leading the worship service once a month, until this school year where it is now once every two months. The youth arrive and bring residents to the place of worship. After everyone is brought back together, the youth lead the service with piano and hymns, the Confession of Sin, the Apostle's Creed, the Lord's Prayer, and even the message. For the last couple of months the message has been brought by Ryan Jones, Tyler Erickson, Mark Franz, and Corey Berge. Anna Franz and Adam Erickson have used their piano talents. We have been building relationships with the residents and they have even come to know each other by name. It has been a blessing to be involved with this ministry! If you would like to join us or help out any other Sunday, contact the church office. Thanks!
-GFLYouth

A real blessing...

I recently had the privilege to minister to the residents at Crystal Care Center. I led and brought the message at the first service with a group on the third floor, this is a group of people who could be brought easily to the worship room. After finishing the service, I was told that there is a group of people on the second floor, who it would not be possible for them to attend the worship service with us because of medical reasons. I was given permission to pay them a visit and pray with them... To my surprise, this group was larger than the group I ministered to upstairs. I led another service there. It was a real blessing to me.

Marcus Erickson from Grace played a piano in the first service. We took time talking to each person who was there. It was a blessed moment to share their stories, answer their questions and pray for their personal requests.

Ministering to such a group of people is a blessing and very rewarding.

"Because of the grace given me by God to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In Christ Jesus, then, I have reason to be proud of my work for God" (Romans 15:15-17.)

One thing that I have learned is that, they need to hear about the hope which is in Jesus just as we all do. Some of them look sick and seem like they are not concentrating when you preach to them, but I have realized that they listen and understand the message.

They need somebody who show them love, care and hope. It's my challenge for the believers to see the need of ministering to such people frequently.

Blessings to you.
Douglas Mmari

No Bible...No Breakfast!

My Grandfather was a man who loved God's Word. He would often say, "No Bible-No Breakfast."

Would it make a difference in your life if you made this your motto? If you aren't spending time daily in God's word I know that it would. God's word is powerful. It creates and sustains spiritual life.

I would like to give you a challenge for the coming year. Join with me in reading through the Bible in 2012. You don't have to read before breakfast, you can read at a time that works best for you. But commit yourself to spend time daily in God's word. You will never regret it.

Marie Sandvik Center Ministry

Once a year the ladies of Grace Free Lutheran Church are given the opportunity to minister through the Marie Sandvik Center, an inner-city mission on East Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis. Through this organization are channeled clothes, housewares, a regular schedule of meals and an outreach ministry that presents the good news of knowing Jesus. There are a number of activities geared to people of varying ages from infant to elderly. The center is there for people who live in that area of Minneapolis. By "live" it means that some have access to a "roof over their heads" in that neighborhood. But, some are not as fortunate and live on the streets.

On October 13th four ladies from GFLC along with AFLTS seminarian Terry Kruger and teens Ryan Jones (GFLC) and Seth Skogerboe (Living Hope LC) were welcomed to the mission to take part in sharing in the center's Christian outreach program. The ladies helped prepare and serve a light lunch which was provided by the women of our congregation. Terry Kruger presented a Christ-centered message and was available to visit and pray with people from the audience. Ryan and Seth provided special music and a sing-a-long time, accompanying themselves with guitar and drum. They also had an opportunity to meet, greet and pray with others in attendance.

The day was a special time of remembrance for me as I recalled serving at the center with my mother, Faye James, back in the 1980's. This time I had the privilege of being there with my grandson, Seth. It was interesting to see that our family's connection to the center now spans three generations and that Marie Sandvik's dream for this ministry has reached out to people in this area since 1940.

Thank you to all the ladies of GFLC who provided sandwiches, cookies and carrots for the lunch that was served. Please pray for this ministry which continues to be a necessary program for those who are in need of a helping hand in the name of Jesus.

Sharing the Gospel

"And He said to them, "Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation" (Mark 16:15).

On October 13th, I had the great privilege to give the message at the Marie Sandvick Center in the Phillips Neighborhood of Minneapolis. I gave the Gospel proclamation and Seth Skogerboe and Ryan Jones provided the music. The people there are genuine and in need of help of not only clothes and food but in need of hope, the hope of salvation in Jesus Christ. I had the privilege to talk to a woman after the service that needed prayer and just a sounding board in which I provided. Please consider in helping those who are in need at Grace Lutheran Church and especially for those who live in low-income housing or in shelters. In the parable of the Great Banquet Luke 14:13 reminds us to invite the poor, lame and the blind when one gives a feast. What a reminder from Jesus to help those in need and to share the Gospel with them to enjoy the riches of Christ of His eternal inheritance.

Submitted by Seminarian Terry Kruger

My trip to the Marie Sandvik Center on October 13th was very interesting. I have never been a place quite like it. My visit made me so thankful for what I have and where I live and what environment I have taken for granted all my life. I remember watching as a volunteer held out clothes and yelled, "XXL polo! XL T-shirt!" Then someone would raise their hand and the volunteer would throw the shirt their way. This continued for some time and as I watched, I sank deeper and deeper into my seat. It was a weird feeling. Almost like I was feeling so guilty for what I have. Being human, I am sometimes more consumed with what I DON'T have rather than being thankful for what God has given me. I am so glad I got the opportunity to sing and play my guitar for these people. It was a blessing to me!

In Everything Give Thanks

In every thing give thanks to God, This is His will for man.
He marks the way that we all trod, We're part of His great plan All things are for our good, He says, The pleasant and the sad. Just knowing that He cares for us Will make our spirits glad.

It isn't hard to praise the Lord
When sunshine floods my way,
When skies are clear and naught has come
To mar my perfect day.
But, oh, it's different when the clouds
Of sorrow round me roll,
When grief and anguish seem to grip
My poor forsaken soul.

But even in those times He says
All things still work for good,
To them who have been placed within
This blessed brotherhood.
Joint-heirs with Christ to all the wealth
The Father has in store.
He's promised all to me, His child:
How could I ask for more?

Why then should I not thank my God
For all He brings my way,
For all the blessings that He pours
On me from day to day?
His favors shower on my path,
My needs He does supply.
I'm made aware of His great love
As each new day goes by.

Be Thankful Unto Him

"Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations." (Psalm 100:1-5).

Mission Sunday Presentation

The Voice of the Martyrs is a Christian organization dedicated to assisting the persecuted church worldwide.

VOM is a non-profit, inter-denominational Christian organization dedicated to assisting the persecuted church worldwide. VOM was founded in 1967 by Pastor Richard Wurmbrand, who was imprisoned 14 years in Communist Romania for his faith in Christ. His wife, Sabina, was imprisoned for three years. In the 1960s, Richard, Sabina, and their son, Mihai, were ransomed out of Romania and came to the United States. Through their travels, the Wurmbrands spread the message of the atrocities that Christians face in restricted nations, while establishing a network of offices dedicated to assisting the persecuted church.

The ministry is based on Hebrews 13:3:
"Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body."

VOM helps Christians who are or have been, persecuted for their involvement in spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ by:
...providing medical assistance, food, clothing, and other forms of aid.
...supporting Christians who are willing to invite their fellow men, even their persecutors, to Jesus Christ through faithful deeds of love in a hostile environment.
...supply Bibles, literature, radios, and other evangelistic tools.
...encourage persecuted Christians by giving their testimony a voice, informing Christians in the USA to know how to help. Believing that the lives and the testimony of persecuted Christians is a vital part of the fellowship of all believers and will challenge and strengthen the faith of Christians everywhere.

Couldn't An Angel Have Done It?

And they said, "Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, who is well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and to hear what you have to say." (Acts 10:22).

The process of bringing Cornelius to faith in Acts 10 started with an angel. He appeared to Cornelius in a vision and told him to send for a man named Simon, who is also called Peter. Wouldn't it have been much simpler if the angel had just presented the gospel to Cornelius? Couldn't the angel have told Cornelius of the death and resurrection of Jesus and the need for faith in Him?

I suppose it would have been easier if the angel had preached the gospel to Cornelius, but that isn't God's plan. He has called you and me to share the gospel with others. We have the privilege to proclaim the good news that there is salvation in Jesus.

I trust you are using the opportunities that God gives you to share His Word. Why not start each day with this prayer: "Lord, lead me to some soul today, and teach me, Lord, what to say." Then look for how He will answer your prayer.

Meet The Monseth's

Fran was born in Minot, North Dakota and Ellen was born in Buffalo Center, Iowa. They met in Minneapolis when Ellen was attending Swedish Hospital School of Nursing and Fran was a student at Augsburg College. After graduation from the AFLC seminary in Plymouth, they moved to Everett, Washington where Fran pastored a congregation for several years. In 1971 they moved back to Minneapolis when Fran began teaching at AFLC Schools. He is the dean of the seminary and teaches in both the seminary and Bible school. God has blessed them with four daughters and two sons, all of whom met their future life-mates at our Bible school. All of the children and their families live in the Minneapolis area except Rhoda and her husband, Nate Jore, who are missionaries in Uganda. Daughter, Rachel and her husband, Justin Jones and their six children are members at Grace as are Rhoda and Nate and their four children. Naomi, the Monseth's oldest daughter, is married to Pastor Bob Halvorson who serves Living Hope (AFLC) in St. Michael. Bob and Naomi have six children. Nathan and his wife, Julie, have five sons and live in St. Michael. Becky and Kyle (Torfin) and their four children live in Elk River. Ben and wife, Andrea, grew up in Grace congregation and live in Maple Grove. Andrea is the oldest daughter of Luis and Becky Valdez.

The Monseth family has been a part of the Grace (formerly Medicine Lake) congregation for forty years and is thankful to God for the wonderful way the ministry of the Word has impacted each of their lives. A verse of Scripture that Fran's pastor-father gave him when he was confirmed has remained a life-long prayer. From Psalm 27:4, it reads, "_One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in His temple_."

Sharing the Gospel

"And He said to them, "Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation" (Mark 16:15).

We have made evangelism so complicated. The Word of God does the work when connected with prayer. Each person who has a living relationship with Christ has all the information they need to share the plan of salvation with their neighbors. In order for one to share the Gospel with their neighbor you need to develop a relationship with them. When there is a relationship of trust then your neighbor will listen.

A very excellent tool to use is Share Jesus without Fear. It has been taught at Grace in the past and is available in the church office.

Bill Fay is the author of Share Jesus and he says "God can use anything we say about Jesus, but He can not use our silence." It is time to open our mouths and tell people about Jesus.

Divine Appointments

"No, I don't know if I've been good enough to make it to heaven."

"The only fear I have regarding death is where I'm going to go when I die."

"I don't need religion or God. I've always been able to do things very well on my own."

My heart breaks when I hear statements like these from people who need the truth of the Gospel in their lives, but millions still live without Him. I believe God has placed each one of us, as believers in Him, in the exact location we are at "for such a time as this," as stated in Esther 4:14. Have you ever prayed that God would bring "Divine Appointments" into your path? I have and continue to do so, and the Lord never fails to answer this prayer. Whether it be at my school or work in the suburb, at the Marie Sandvik Center in downtown Minneapolis, on a bus on the way to the state fair, in the tent villages in Haiti, or across the world on the cobblestone streets of Jerusalem, the Lord has been gracious enough to use me, the shy one who used to hide behind her mom in church as a little girl, to share with others the hope that I have in Christ. Just this last month, I received an email from an elementary school girl that I had gotten to know when volunteering at the Marie Sandvik Center. I had not heard from her in over a year, until I saw that she had emailed me. She only emailed me a few sentences, but two of them read, "I'm starting to think about if God is the right choice. I don't think so." Once again, God answered my prayer to bring someone into my life that day to share with about Him. I was able to email her back, encouraging her to continue to seek Jesus, amidst all the hard things she is facing in her life. God never brings people into our lives by chance, but He does bring "Divine Appointments" into our lives to accomplish His will and bring Him glory. I pray that these verses may be true in my life: "For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this: that One died for all, therefore all died; and He died for all, so that they who live should no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf." (2 Cor. 5:14-15).

Go and Tell

Reaching out to others with the gospel was something that I knew I should do, and I wanted to do, but it always seemed to be something that I wasn't sure how to do.

Thankfully, as I have been daily seeking Jesus, consistently spending time in His Word and prayer, outreach has just seemed to.happen. As I am learning from His Word and getting to know Him more, I am starting to see others the way He sees them, to love others the way He loves them. It seems that as the pressure to do has been replaced by the desire to be at His feet, a shift in focus has occurred from soul-winning to loving like Jesus; from seeing others' spiritual poverty to seeing my own; from doing the work of Jesus to being like Jesus. Practically speaking, things start to happen.like meeting a woman at the park who has a seeking heart.delivering Christmas goodies to the neighbors.developing relationships.handing out flyers about a women's Bible study in our home.praying for opportunities to share Christ.

But the key that I am beginning to realize is that any ministry or outreach I have is the direct result of sitting at the feet of Jesus, receiving His grace, and recognizing my total dependence on Him to work in and through me.

Through the Focus on the Family "True U" series. This series is intended to help teens examine the evidence, gain tools necessary to stand firm, and own a personal faith in the God of the Universe.

"ALWAYS BE PREPARED to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have." (I Peter 3:15).

TrueU is a precursor to the in-depth study presented in The Truth Project of how to live-out a Christian worldview.

The Friends of the Academy

For as long as Heritage Christian Academy has been in existence, prayer has been its foundation and daily sustenance. Each year a new "praying" team is assembled. We call ourselves The Friends of the Academy. The goal, each year, is that each and every student and staff person is lifted up in prayer regularly. In addition, a monthly "prayer alert" is sent out (emailed) announcing pertinent praises and prayer requests. We have witnessed a very POWERFUL God at work in our Academy time and time again.

If you would like to be a part of this 2011/12 team, please contact Jennie at Geurman@subrad.com.

Cell and Celebration

"And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified" (Acts 20:32).

The early church in Jerusalem understood the value of gathering together with one another. Acts 2:47 says that they met together "in the temple, and...from house to house." In other words, they were with one another for larger gatherings of worship and for smaller gatherings of fellowship. Someone has called this "cell and celebration."

As we begin the fall schedule here at Grace I want to challenge you to make a "cell and celebration" a part of your like each week. Commit yourself not only to be consistent in Sunday morning worship, but commit yourself also to be involved in a weekly small group. There are many opportunities to grow in your relationship to Jesus as you meet with His people for fellowship, Bible study and prayer. Don't miss out on what God wants to do to make you more like Jesus!

Robert Quern

Meet Wednesday Night Kid's Club Director

Robert Quern

I grew up in Oslo, MN, a small town in the northwest corner of the state. I was raised in a Christian family, and was involved in Church activities from a young age. After graduating high school in East Grand Forks, MN, I moved to the Minneapolis area in 2003, and attended the Bible School in Plymouth. Since that time, I have remained in the Cities working full-time, while pursuing a degree in Elementary Education, and leading the children's ministry here at Grace.

God has blessed me with a wonderful family. My parents, Miles and Carol, who still reside in Oslo, provided a strong Christian example to follow. I also have two sisters, Sara and Rachael, who live in Ramsey, MN, and a brother who is stationed at Fort Bliss, El Paso, TX, where he lives with his wife, Debra.

God has always, and continues to show his unending faithfulness. Through the good times and bad, God is present, shining a light in the darkness. It is a comfort to know whatever challenges life gives, none are too big for God to handle.

"Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." (Isaiah 40:30-31).

Chris Kumpula

Meet the New Sunday School Superintendent

Chris Kumpula

*Graduating from University of St Thomas with BA in Political Science/International Studies in January
*22 years old, live in Elk River
*Interests: reading, politics, history, school, singing, and a whole lot of other stuff

I am very pleased to be helping teachers and students this year as GFLC's new superintendent for Sunday school. We hope very much to increase the communication amongst students, parents, teachers, and board members as we work as one body of Christ as a church. I suppose it would be a good thing to make sure everyone knew just a wee bit about me. I'm a 22 year old college student attending the University of St Thomas, and I should be finished this January with my BA in political science and international studies. It doesn't take long to discover that I love books and I love school. My bedroom is pretty much a reading room which I occasionally sleep in. I'm always lugging books around when I commute from Elk River to school and back again. My car has quickly become my life as I make the pit stops at home before heading back down to the cities. It gets to be a rather nomadic routine, but it means I can pop in to visit friends in the cities. Any of those friends will tell you that I talk politics...a lot. It's a passion of mine to study and talk about the problem of the Christian and the state in today's world, so don't be surprised if it comes up in conversation! As life becomes sane again in the spring, I'll be on the job search again and get myself ready for grad school. I hope very much to eventually earn a PhD so I can teach and write books of my own. A public life may come first, however, depending on how the next year shapes up. My prayer has been that God would slam shut the doors He doesn't wish to lead me through, and He has been faithful in guiding me through these last years. Whether in education, policy, or ministry, I will I look forward to continuing to be a part of the fellowship and ministry of GFLC as I seek to serve our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

One of my favorite verses: Psalm 1:1-3 "How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers."

Kid's Club

It's hard to believe another summer is already coming to a close. I hope everyone has been finding the time to get out and enjoy the warmer weather. As the final weeks of summer approach, our attention naturally shifts towards one thing: the State Fair! It's also time to prepare for back to school, and with that, another year of Kid's Club, here at Grace.

I am very excited to kick off my third year as director of the children's ministry. We will spend the majority of the year taking an interactive look at the book of Proverbs, as well as time each week working on Bible memory, and music. I would like to personally invite each one of you to take advantage of this program, and bring your children ages 4 years (or almost 4) - entering the 6th grade for an hour fun, fellowship, and a little learning about living a life pleasing to God. As always, we meet in the choir room from 6:30 - 7:30, while the adult Bible study meets up in the library.

I fully understand everyone has busy schedules. I do hope you will consider making Wednesday night a part of your schedule, even if it's not possible to make it every week. I also welcome any neighbors or friends your children wish to invite along. If you have any questions for me, feel free to contact me anytime. I can be reached via e-mail, cell phone @ (612) 578-2669, or in person on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings. The new year starts September 7. I hope to see you then!

God bless you all, and your family,
Robert Quern

Family Devotions

We often will read a portion of Scripture and each will share something that sticks out or means a lot to whomever is sharing. We each take turns and say why it means something. A new devotional (to us) we sometimes use is Martin Luther's "Faith Alone" (edited by James C. Galvin).

A book that I enjoyed reading to my younger one's (the book says for 9-12 yr olds on the back) for devotions was "Grandpa's Box: Retelling the Biblical Story of Redemption" by Starr Meade. I enjoyed it as much as they did. You can view small portions of it at www.christianbook.com.
Brenda Erickson

All I use is the Bible. I lead my girls through one book at a time and for much of their lives so far I have emphasized the Old Testament for a host of reasons. That said, I'm currently taking them through the book of Revelation where their eyes get very wide :)
Dave Leland

I do devotions one on one with Becca and with Charlie. We usually do it right before bed. Becca and I use a book that I used with my parents growing up. It is called "Little Visits With God." There is a short devotional with questions and prayer. For Charlie I use a book called "My Good Night Bible" that follows the same format, but tells a Bible story.

Arnold Ytreede's Advent series during the Christmas season is our favoriteJotham's Journey, Tabitha's travels to name a few. We also have used the Heaven book for kids, and Little Visits with God

Faith Search Discovery

Please come on a journey this fall as we dive into the questions regarding our Faith in Jesus Christ! We will be usingDon Bierle's Faith Search material looking at questions like:

  • Why Am I Here?
  • Can I Believe the Bible?
  • Is Jesus Really God?
  • Can Faith Be Reasonable?
  • And How Can I Know God?

Along with this we will look closely at evidence for the Resurrection and consider the question...

  • What if Jesus Had Never Been Born?

Come with an open heart, with all the questions your mind can muster, and with a desire to search for truth by looking at the evidence!

TrueU Series

Begins in September on Sunday mornings 9:00 a.m. For High school students with Jennie Eurman leading the sessions.

ARE OUR TEENS PREPARED to defend their Biblical beliefs when peers, and even educators are challenging this world view in an increasingly hostile culture?

FLY CONVENTION 2011

July 4-9, Estes Park, CO

"Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name" (John 20:30-31).

I may sound like a broken record when I say this, but it is true. It was a great week at the FLY Convention in Colorado. Besides the beauty of the YMCA Camp of the Rockies, it was a beautiful thing to see what God did in the lives of many of the young people who attended. As the Word of God was preached and taught, the Holy Spirit brought conviction of sin and renewal. Read on as some of the youth from our church share what the Lord did in their lives.

Lessons learned at FLY...thoughts and feedback from our youth....

I learned a lot about God's love for me, especially as we talked about the wrath of God. Dana Coyle spoke of how Jesus was our burnt patch of ground and the fire - wrath of God - can never touch me. I grasped the love of God more clearly now. The worship music was a highlight for me and seeing friends from all over the country.

This week God convicted me that my life is not my own and not about me at all. It's easy to become self-centered and put your needs and desires first. God's been teaching me that He needs to have first place in every area of my life because my life's all about Him. The only reason is to give him glory through praising him and bringing others closer to Him. I've also realized that in this life, dead to myself, but alive in Christ, is the only fulfilling life there is. He showed me that He should be my only focus, not myself, anyone else, or the things of this world. And I know He's worth everything I have. I especially enjoyed mountain climbing, worshiping through music, and Eric Westlake's message.

I learned that God wants literally every part of my life. Not just half. I was living a half and half life. But after I recommitted my life to Christ, I learned to love the Word and praise him with all my heart. My personal highlight was Eric Westlake's sermon where I recommitted myself to Christ and I enjoyed the basketball tournament.

I should keep my heart open to God at all times. I learned that I don't deserve anything and all I deserve is hell. I also learned that I should worship every day and not just Sunday and Wednesday. Worship isn't just music. Eric Westlake's evening session was extremely convicting that I only deserve hell. But I have God's grace. The skit guys who performed were extremely funny.

FLY is a national youth convention of the AFLC held every 2 years with the purpose of providing congregations with a tool to win the lost, build the believer, and encourage student discipleshipin the local congregation.

The Climber

The way is rough, and dark, and steep,
Demanding courage, strength, and time;
Though mists surround and shadows creep,
Teach me to climb.
Though struggle test my heart and soul,
And not much blue of sky is seen,
When perils loom and take their toll,
Teach me to lean.
When I have left the vale below,
And struggled on and done my best,
Then, panting in the sunset glow,
Teach me to rest.
O God of the precarious way,
Of heights and steeps of Thy design,
What joy to realize each day
Thy staff is mine.

Mission Trip to Quito, Ecuador

Kathryn and Carolyn Eurman experienced a memorable trip to Ecuador through "Never the Same" missions. They truly came back never the same. This was their 3rd summer missions trip with this group and their 1st trip to Ecuador.

The group of 350 students were divided into eight ministry teams. The first few days were spent in Miami learning the drama; "Spellbound" which powerfully tells the story of Jesus' life on earth and the gift of salvation He offers. The ministry to the Ecuadorians would center around this drama.

During their ten days, June 25 - July 11, in Ecuador they presented their drama in schools, orphanages, city parks, churches, etc. After each drama, an invitation to accept Christ's free gift of salvation was given and the students would pray with those who came forward. By the end of the trip 1,024 Ecuadorians had accepted Christ!

Also, the group provided service projects by painting, gardening, cleaning...and always taking time to play with the kids and mingle with the adults.

At the end of each day the group would gather for Worship and were challenged by the inspirational speakers and musical concerts by gifted Christian artists. These services were a highlight of the trip and they truly felt the presence of God.

It was an amazing experience for the Eurmans to witness what God had planned for them in Equador and the people God put in their path who they had the privilege of witnessing to.

Next summer, the same group will be going to Panama. They hope to be part of this great ministry once again if it is God's will.

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope" (Jeremiah 29:11).

Summer Institute of Theology 2011 August 1-5
The Summer Institute of Theology is an extension of the regular seminary program. It is conducted each summer during the first full week of August. The institute provides an opportunity for continuing education for pastors and lay-people under the guidance of the regular faculty as well as guest lecturers who are recognized as leaders in specialized areas of theological study. It also serves "licensed pastors" in the AFLC who are required to successfully complete eight credits annually in order to maintain their clergy license.

A full range of theological courses in the Old and New Testaments, Systematic Theology, Church History, and Pastoral Work are offered in a twelve year cycle. Participants registering for credit at the institute are given research projects which are due on November 1 of the same year. A certificate of Pastoral Studies (C.P.S.) is awarded to those who successfully complete 96 credit hours. Credits earned in the Institute are not transferable into the regular seminary program due to the altered expectations in course fulfillment as well as the compacted structure of the courses.

Grace Free Lutheran Church Newsletter

Pastor Peter Franz

June/July 2011

"Words of Grace" are words that both come from Grace, your church, and words that give grace to you or encourage you as you walk with the Lord. In these regular emails you will find a variety of things that we hope will be helpful to you.

"And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified" (Acts 20:32).

Many Thanks...

As my year at Grace comes to an end, I want to thank every member of the congregation for their support and encouragement. Your year has been filled with joy and tears; thank you for letting me experience them with you. I have enjoyed the times of visitation that I shared with many of you. They have been special opportunities of getting to know you as individuals. The fellowship that I have enjoyed in Bible study, congregational meetings, and during informal times are moments that I will not soon forget. Each of you has truly been a blessing to my family and me.

Many of you know that my heart, from when I first felt the call to go to seminary, has been to serve in a ministry that focuses on one-on-one discipleship. I see the need for a ministry in which believers are trained to come alongside fellow Christians to encourage them in their faith walk. I have been strengthened in this calling as I have gone through the call process and believe this is where the Lord will use me.

What is coming next for the Mairs Family? I will be working at a small chiropractic clinic in Waseca, Minnesota and working with area AFLC congregations in a discipleship ministry. Some of the details are still being worked out, but we are excited to move forward with the next phase of life and ministry. We would welcome your continued prayer support as we serve the Lord in southern Minnesota. God bless Grace Free Lutheran Church.

Ryan Mairs

Cory, Deb, Davis, Drew and Brooks Buck

Meet the Buck family...

What summer plans do the Buck's have?Family Camp and visits to South Dakota to visit Cory's family.

What is your family like? In addition to spending time together: Cory enjoys golfing, running, and reading; Deb enjoys reading, being outside, and spending time with friends; Davis (6) enjoys drawing, riding his bike, telling stories, and searching for insects; Drew (4) enjoys any type of construction truck, learning how things work, and listening to books; Brooks (8 months) enjoys watching his older brothers, chewing on things, and giving sloppy kisses.

What are your hobbies? We enjoy playing in the backyard, swimming, riding bicycles, and reading.

How would you describe your upbringing? Deb and I were both raised in Christian homes. We are grateful for the influence our parents have had and continue to have on our lives and the lives of our children.

How did you become a Christian? I became a Christian when I was 23 through the ministry of my pastors and listening to Insight for Living. Deb received Christ through baptism and asked Jesus into her heart as a little child. She never remembers a time when she did not trust in Jesus.

How did you get involved in ministry? After attending the Association Free Lutheran Bible School, I realized how important it is to be involved in the local congregation. Not only is it our responsibility as believers, but it also is another way for God to teach us and mold us into the servants he desires.

What are you learning right now? We are constantly humbled by the responsibility of raising a young family. Through our roles as spouses and parents, we are reminded of how short we fall of God's standards and only by His grace can we be His children. God continually shows us the need to be in His Word daily and to be in prayer as we seek His will.

Tributes to Dad....

My father Kaare Berge was and is a great, great man. He is the reason I came to AFLBS, which really was a turning point in my life. To see how he has dealt with issues in his life will always be an inspiration to me. My dad was never very talkative and after his stroke has become even less outspoken. He loves Jesus so he loves people. We laugh together (over the phone) about our disabilities, our characters are similar that way. I know he would give anything to make my life easier, as fathers wouldn't we do the same for our families? That's what fathers do.
My dad was born in Norway and grew up in Binford, ND. He was a math teacher by trade but always wanted to farm. He purchased a wheat and cattle ranch in North Central Oregon about 33 years ago. Working side by side (every day for 12 hour days) you get to know someone pretty well. We had a saying "you learn something new every day, and you break a lot of things." Needless to say we learned and fixed a lot of things together. I love my mentor, my friend, my dad. Jim Berge

Hard working, humble, hilarious are three words that describe my father. However, the words that I would say that DEFINE my father, Fran Monseth, would be Follower of the Lord!! As a child, I remember many times watching Dad as he witnessed to a man at the gas station, a family at the campground or various other places. Telling people about the Good News of Jesus is always in the forefront of his conversations. I am so blessed to have this heritage! Rachel Jones

When I think of a father I think of a person who makes sacrifices, has unconditional love, listens, is understanding and one who demands respect because of his authenticity. My dad, Don Crellin, is not perfect, but he exhibits these attributes most of the time. I am thankful for my dad for this so that I am able to understand more clearly who my Heavenly Dad is. Now that I am a dad, I am understanding how much more I need to depend on my Heavenly Father to be authentic and real to my family. God's design is perfect! I am looking forward to being a grandpa some day so I can enjoy being a father from this perspective too. My Grandpa spent a lot of time taking me fishing. I hope I am able to spend quality time with my grandkids in similar ways, making God more real to them. John Crellin

"First of all what's nice about my Dad (Justin Jones) **is that he's a Christian and he believes that Jesus Christ is our Lord and He died for us_. Some other things that are awesome about my Dad is that he is hilarious, good at basketball, likes to have fun, but not too much fun because he hates Chuck E. Cheese. He lets us play sports, takes us fun places, cares for and about us and loves us. Long story short, HE'S THE BEST DAD IN THE WORLD!" Grant Jones

My father, Amos O. Dyrud was a humble, simple and Godly man. A man of Godly character and strong conviction towards Jesus Christ whom I had the utmost love and respect for. I can not thank the Lord enough to have blessed my family and me with Amos & Ovidie Dyrud. They are/were the best parents, in-laws, grandparents and nana-nana and bapa-bapa that one could ever have. Another very important memory of my Dad is the fact that I could and would pray with, confess to, and seek advice about anything. Dad may have seemed like the "perfect" man and one whom could be "feared" because of his close walk with the Lord but I always felt and sought comfort from him and confessed all my sins with and prayed to Jesus with Dad on our knees in the living room of our house (even in my adult life) asking Jesus for forgiveness. Dad was a COMFORTING man and one whom was very respected by my family. I love you Dad and cannot wait to see you in heaven. Samuel son of Amos

Remembering My Father with Thankfulness
It has been a number of years since my pastor/father, Fritjof Monseth, went home to be with the Lord. However, the memories are fresh as I think of his godly example and ministry not only in the congregations he served but also in our family home. I can never forget how he read from the Scriptures he loved so much and led us in earnest, heartfelt prayer each evening after supper; and then, how we sang Gospel songs and choruses around the piano and talked about the Lord in between. But it isn't just a matter of remembering my loving father's humble, Christ-like life and ministry. The greatest reason for my thankfulness was his personal concern for my spiritual life and that he consistently pointed me to his Savior - and my Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ! Dr. Fran Monseth

FEED MY STARVING CHILDREN

About 25 members of Grace were able to be involved with Feed My Starving Children in place of a regular Wednesday night activity this past month. These members of Grace joined in either scooping specially prepared food mixes in to bags, weighing or sealing them, and packing them in boxes to be shipped off. These meals will be sent to malnourished and starving children living in extremely poor conditions, such as Haiti. Those helping packed 1,800 bags of food for up to 21,600 meals! This formula, called MannaPack Potato-D, contains the nourishment starving children under 1 year need to recover from extreme malnourishment. It is also the only formula shown to protect these children from diarrhea, one of the leading causes of death in these little lives.

At the end, prayer was offered over the food that was packaged. May the children who receive these meals be healed physically and spiritually through the love of Jesus!

If you are interested in packaging food for FMSC let us know. We are planning to organize another group in the coming months.

Thanks!
Lydia

VBS 2011

Gold Rush - Discovering Jesus by Answers in Genesis

June 27- July 1, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon.
For students entering Kindergarten through 6th grade.

It is finally nice outside, which makes many people start thinking and planning for summer. One thing to remember is VBS which is June 27-July 1 from 9am-noon at Grace. This year's theme is Gold Rush: Discovering the Rock of Ages. It emphasizes knowing that everything in the Bible is true and will help the children look to the Bible to answer questions.

Proverbs 22:6 tells us to "Train a child the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it."

Even if you are not able to be at VBS, there are ways you can help. The easiest way would be to pray. Please pray that souls will be saved, believers will receive encouragement, and seeds for future ministry will be planted.

I am personally very excited about this year's VBS. I think the kids and staff are going to be equally blessed. Alicia Bohm, VBS Staff
