The Child With Many Names
If you read Matthew's account of the birth of Jesus you will notice that Mary's child had many different names. He is called Immanuel, and Jesus, and the King of the Jews, as well as a ruler and a shepherd. Each one of these names gives us a little different picture of who this child is that the Magi came to worship.
Jesus means "Savior." He came to be God for us. In going to the cross He laid down his life for us.
Immanuel means "God with us." Because He took on human flesh he understands us. He was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
As the King of the Jews Jesus is God over us. We willingly bow at his feet, acknowledging that He has the right to reign over us.
As our shepherd Jesus is God beside us in all the experiences of life. He feeds us and protects us from danger as we look to Him each day.
We pray that during this Advent season you would take the time to meditate on the names of our Lord. His names are important because they help us to understand who He is and what He desires to do in our lives.
As a family we thank you for the many ways you have shown your love to us this past year. You have been a great source of encouragement. May God bless you as you celebrate the coming of our Savior.

The Westlake Family
Todd and Karen Westlake have been members of Grace (then Medicine Lake Lutheran) since 1993, but their history goes back to the mid - 80's when they both were going to school at AFLBS and frequently attended services while on campus.
After graduating from Bible school in 1984, they remained in the Twin Cities area to attend college and were married in 1986. Currently they reside in Rogers and have three sons. Kyle is in his second year at North Hennepin Community College following a year at AFLBS and is seriously considering his father's career path. He is engaged to Holly Foy and they will be married this July. He plays the bass guitar on the Praise and Worship team at Grace. Luke is a junior at AFLBS and has plans to pursue a career in the field of medicine. He enjoys singing with the Praise and Worship team and can be found at the soundboard during the service from time to time as well. Zachary attends Heritage and is in the 6th grade. He especially has enjoyed having his dad as his Sunday school teacher over the last two years.
Todd is an orthotist prosthetist (fitting braces and artificial limbs) and has worked in the Twin Cities for the past 20 years, starting his own business 3 years ago. In addition to teaching the 5th-6th grade Sunday school class at Grace, he also serves on the mission committee and is a member of the school board of Heritage Christian Academy. After working in the field of interior design and sales for many years, Karen, has spent the last eleven, being a stay-at-home mom. She enjoys volunteering at HCA, singing with the praise team and choir at Grace, and serves on the mission and women's ministry committees.
An interesting bit of history that some may know, is that Pastor Franz served his internship at Todd's church in Eben Junction, MI, when Todd was in high school. The Westlakes' are grateful for the blessing to be shepherded by Pastor once again and are so thankful for the fellowship at Grace and God's faithfulness to their family over the years. |

Outreach Ministry at Crystal Center Center
A blessed experience...
Crystal Care has been a long-standing tradition for the Grace Free Lutheran Youth Group. For anyone who may not know, Crystal Care is a nursing home in Crystal. The youth group has been leading the worship service once a month, until this school year where it is now once every two months. The youth arrive and bring residents to the place of worship. After everyone is brought back together, the youth lead the service with piano and hymns, the Confession of Sin, the Apostle's Creed, the Lord's Prayer, and even the message. For the last couple of months the message has been brought by Ryan Jones, Tyler Erickson, Mark Franz, and Corey Berge. Anna Franz and Adam Erickson have used their piano talents. We have been building relationships with the residents and they have even come to know each other by name. It has been a blessing to be involved with this ministry! If you would like to join us or help out any other Sunday, contact the church office. Thanks! -GFLYouth
A real blessing...
I recently had the privilege to minister to the residents at Crystal Care Center. I led and brought the message at the first service with a group on the third floor, this is a group of people who could be brought easily to the worship room. After finishing the service, I was told that there is a group of people on the second floor, who it would not be possible for them to attend the worship service with us because of medical reasons. I was given permission to pay them a visit and pray with them... To my surprise, this group was larger than the group I ministered to upstairs. I led another service there. It was a real blessing to me.
Marcus Erickson from Grace played a piano in the first service. We took time talking to each person who was there. It was a blessed moment to share their stories, answer their questions and pray for their personal requests.
Ministering to such a group of people is a blessing and very rewarding.
"Because of the grace given me by God to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In Christ Jesus, then, I have reason to be proud of my work for God" (Romans 15:15-17.)
One thing that I have learned is that, they need to hear about the hope which is in Jesus just as we all do. Some of them look sick and seem like they are not concentrating when you preach to them, but I have realized that they listen and understand the message.
They need somebody who show them love, care and hope. It's my challenge for the believers to see the need of ministering to such people frequently.
Blessings to you. Douglas Mmari |

Mission Sunday Presentation
Distant Shores Media
Sunday, January 15, 9:00 a.m. Presented by Ben Jore
Distant Shores Media was founded in 2003 as a ministry focused on providing training, consultation and support services for Christian radio stations in Eastern Europe. Staff and volunteers with experience in everything from operations to transmitters to broadcast programming worked on-site with staff from radio stations in numerous European countries to help them improve and expand their radio ministry.
The ministry has since expanded to include countries all over the world. In the last few years, we have also expanded our focus to cover mobile phone and web technology as well as radio broadcast.
When we look at the world, we see a need that demands a response and an incredible opportunity.
A Need In people groups all over the world, new believers want to learn to be disciples of Christ, but they do not have the opportunity to do so. They need access to discipleship materials and resources in their own language that enable them to grow in spiritual maturity. Though thousands of discipleship resources exist in some common languages, many are under copyright and so cannot be legally translated, adapted and freely redistributed without restriction.
The global church needs to be equipped with open discipleship tools.
Our Response We are creating legally unrestricted discipleship resources that equip believers everywhere in the world, in any language, to grow as disciples of Christ. We are making the resources available on the Internet, on mobile devices and in print as well as multimedia formats.dsmedia.org Distant Shores Media is focused on helping the global church to grow in maturity as disciples of Christ. We do this in a number of ways, including leadership training, providing consulting services and infrastructure development.
Leadership Training One of our most important areas of service is in cross-cultural leadership training. We focus on character development and spiritual transformation, as well as teaching Biblical principles of leadership and business management. Our goal is to help enable our brothers and sisters in Christ around the world to know the love of God, to be equipped to train others to grow in discipleship, and to be humble and effective leaders in their communities.
Consulting Services One of our greatest joys is helping Christian organizations and ministries around the world to overcome obstacles that hinder them from accomplishing their ministry objectives. To that end, we provide consultative support for ministries in broadcast, information technology and other fields.
Infrastructure development Making the most of the new opportunities God puts before each of us often requires developing innovative tools and technical infrastructure that makes it possible to use these opportunities to the fullest. We focus on developing tools that are both free of charge and legally unrestricted so that they can be used without hindrance by anyone, anywhere.

Many Thanks...
As my year at Grace comes to an end, I want to thank every member of the congregation for their support and encouragement. Your year has been filled with joy and tears; thank you for letting me experience them with you. I have enjoyed the times of visitation that I shared with many of you. They have been special opportunities of getting to know you as individuals. The fellowship that I have enjoyed in Bible study, congregational meetings, and during informal times are moments that I will not soon forget. Each of you has truly been a blessing to my family and me.
Many of you know that my heart, from when I first felt the call to go to seminary, has been to serve in a ministry that focuses on one-on-one discipleship. I see the need for a ministry in which believers are trained to come alongside fellow Christians to encourage them in their faith walk. I have been strengthened in this calling as I have gone through the call process and believe this is where the Lord will use me.
What is coming next for the Mairs Family? I will be working at a small chiropractic clinic in Waseca, Minnesota and working with area AFLC congregations in a discipleship ministry. Some of the details are still being worked out, but we are excited to move forward with the next phase of life and ministry. We would welcome your continued prayer support as we serve the Lord in southern Minnesota. God bless Grace Free Lutheran Church.

Cory, Deb, Davis, Drew and Brooks Buck
Meet the Buck family...
What summer plans do the Buck's have?Family Camp and visits to South Dakota to visit Cory's family.
What is your family like? In addition to spending time together: Cory enjoys golfing, running, and reading; Deb enjoys reading, being outside, and spending time with friends; Davis (6) enjoys drawing, riding his bike, telling stories, and searching for insects; Drew (4) enjoys any type of construction truck, learning how things work, and listening to books; Brooks (8 months) enjoys watching his older brothers, chewing on things, and giving sloppy kisses.
What are your hobbies? We enjoy playing in the backyard, swimming, riding bicycles, and reading.
How would you describe your upbringing? Deb and I were both raised in Christian homes. We are grateful for the influence our parents have had and continue to have on our lives and the lives of our children.
How did you become a Christian? I became a Christian when I was 23 through the ministry of my pastors and listening to Insight for Living. Deb received Christ through baptism and asked Jesus into her heart as a little child. She never remembers a time when she did not trust in Jesus.
How did you get involved in ministry? After attending the Association Free Lutheran Bible School, I realized how important it is to be involved in the local congregation. Not only is it our responsibility as believers, but it also is another way for God to teach us and mold us into the servants he desires.
What are you learning right now? We are constantly humbled by the responsibility of raising a young family. Through our roles as spouses and parents, we are reminded of how short we fall of God's standards and only by His grace can we be His children. God continually shows us the need to be in His Word daily and to be in prayer as we seek His will.

Tributes to Dad....
My father Kaare Berge was and is a great, great man. He is the reason I came to AFLBS, which really was a turning point in my life. To see how he has dealt with issues in his life will always be an inspiration to me. My dad was never very talkative and after his stroke has become even less outspoken. He loves Jesus so he loves people. We laugh together (over the phone) about our disabilities, our characters are similar that way. I know he would give anything to make my life easier, as fathers wouldn't we do the same for our families? That's what fathers do. My dad was born in Norway and grew up in Binford, ND. He was a math teacher by trade but always wanted to farm. He purchased a wheat and cattle ranch in North Central Oregon about 33 years ago. Working side by side (every day for 12 hour days) you get to know someone pretty well. We had a saying "you learn something new every day, and you break a lot of things." Needless to say we learned and fixed a lot of things together. I love my mentor, my friend, my dad. Jim Berge
Hard working, humble, hilarious are three words that describe my father. However, the words that I would say that DEFINE my father, Fran Monseth, would be Follower of the Lord!! As a child, I remember many times watching Dad as he witnessed to a man at the gas station, a family at the campground or various other places. Telling people about the Good News of Jesus is always in the forefront of his conversations. I am so blessed to have this heritage! Rachel Jones
When I think of a father I think of a person who makes sacrifices, has unconditional love, listens, is understanding and one who demands respect because of his authenticity. My dad, Don Crellin, is not perfect, but he exhibits these attributes most of the time. I am thankful for my dad for this so that I am able to understand more clearly who my Heavenly Dad is. Now that I am a dad, I am understanding how much more I need to depend on my Heavenly Father to be authentic and real to my family. God's design is perfect! I am looking forward to being a grandpa some day so I can enjoy being a father from this perspective too. My Grandpa spent a lot of time taking me fishing. I hope I am able to spend quality time with my grandkids in similar ways, making God more real to them. John Crellin
"First of all what's nice about my Dad (Justin Jones) **is that he's a Christian and he believes that Jesus Christ is our Lord and He died for us_. Some other things that are awesome about my Dad is that he is hilarious, good at basketball, likes to have fun, but not too much fun because he hates Chuck E. Cheese. He lets us play sports, takes us fun places, cares for and about us and loves us. Long story short, HE'S THE BEST DAD IN THE WORLD!" Grant Jones
My father, Amos O. Dyrud was a humble, simple and Godly man. A man of Godly character and strong conviction towards Jesus Christ whom I had the utmost love and respect for. I can not thank the Lord enough to have blessed my family and me with Amos & Ovidie Dyrud. They are/were the best parents, in-laws, grandparents and nana-nana and bapa-bapa that one could ever have. Another very important memory of my Dad is the fact that I could and would pray with, confess to, and seek advice about anything. Dad may have seemed like the "perfect" man and one whom could be "feared" because of his close walk with the Lord but I always felt and sought comfort from him and confessed all my sins with and prayed to Jesus with Dad on our knees in the living room of our house (even in my adult life) asking Jesus for forgiveness. Dad was a COMFORTING man and one whom was very respected by my family. I love you Dad and cannot wait to see you in heaven. Samuel son of Amos
Remembering My Father with Thankfulness It has been a number of years since my pastor/father, Fritjof Monseth, went home to be with the Lord. However, the memories are fresh as I think of his godly example and ministry not only in the congregations he served but also in our family home. I can never forget how he read from the Scriptures he loved so much and led us in earnest, heartfelt prayer each evening after supper; and then, how we sang Gospel songs and choruses around the piano and talked about the Lord in between. But it isn't just a matter of remembering my loving father's humble, Christ-like life and ministry. The greatest reason for my thankfulness was his personal concern for my spiritual life and that he consistently pointed me to his Savior - and my Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ! Dr. Fran Monseth |

FEED MY STARVING CHILDREN
About 25 members of Grace were able to be involved with Feed My Starving Children in place of a regular Wednesday night activity this past month. These members of Grace joined in either scooping specially prepared food mixes in to bags, weighing or sealing them, and packing them in boxes to be shipped off. These meals will be sent to malnourished and starving children living in extremely poor conditions, such as Haiti. Those helping packed 1,800 bags of food for up to 21,600 meals! This formula, called MannaPack Potato-D, contains the nourishment starving children under 1 year need to recover from extreme malnourishment. It is also the only formula shown to protect these children from diarrhea, one of the leading causes of death in these little lives.
At the end, prayer was offered over the food that was packaged. May the children who receive these meals be healed physically and spiritually through the love of Jesus!
If you are interested in packaging food for FMSC let us know. We are planning to organize another group in the coming months.
Thanks! Lydia |

VBS 2011
Gold Rush - Discovering Jesus by Answers in Genesis
June 27- July 1, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon. For students entering Kindergarten through 6th grade.
It is finally nice outside, which makes many people start thinking and planning for summer. One thing to remember is VBS which is June 27-July 1 from 9am-noon at Grace. This year's theme is Gold Rush: Discovering the Rock of Ages. It emphasizes knowing that everything in the Bible is true and will help the children look to the Bible to answer questions.
Proverbs 22:6 tells us to "Train a child the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it."
Even if you are not able to be at VBS, there are ways you can help. The easiest way would be to pray. Please pray that souls will be saved, believers will receive encouragement, and seeds for future ministry will be planted.
I am personally very excited about this year's VBS. I think the kids and staff are going to be equally blessed. Alicia Bohm, VBS Staff |
